Men’s Health Week.

I’m taking strides to save men’s lives.

Prostate cancer is Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancer. 1 in 5 men are likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime.

That’s why, this Men’s Health Week, I’m making every step count.

Will you donate today and help fund new research to detect and defeat prostate cancer?

My Updates

A Stranger Calls

Sunday 8th Jun

Change arrives after the cancer

Hardly surprising

The cancer was a quiet visitor at first

A genuine unknown unknown

Not any more

Now it’s everywhere

Maybe taking a cue from the film of the two Daniels, Everything Everywhere All At Once

Maybe just a prosaic nomad out & about

Can’t escape its presence or the psychological intrusion

The books next to my spot in the lounge have changed

No American politics

Nothing about Donald Trump - maybe a blessing but really cancer doesn’t have those

No crime fiction

No biographies

The proximity to Trump prompts a smile

You’ve got cancer, Trump is certainly malignant & your illness is as pervasive as the American’s chronic invasion of modern life

Now your books are texts on “disease, treatment options and outcomes”.

Is it possible to have a prognosis any more thuddingly dull?

Would these texts be available in Trump’s USA or would the bad Kennedy boy lose them in his mad quest to rid the once great nation of science & all of its questions & answers?

Living with cancer is what my medical team point towards

A destination - not just a journey, as Zsofia, the niece of protagonist Laszlo Toth explains at the end of one of this year’s better films, The Brutalist

You learn within just a few days, the regimented life ahead is lined up in rows & in a triaged order, pills, intravenous drugs & the need to stay healthy & keep you strength & muscle in good order

So first you learn cancer is here

Next you learn it isn’t going nowhere

As Bobby Dylan said 60 years past “Buy me some rings & a gun that sings

A flute that toots & a bee that stings

The sky that cries & a bird that flies

A fish that walks & a dog that talks”

In a world constrained by cancer, this says not quite all

But oh, hell, it says a lot.
