Why “Walk for Him”?
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Australian men- 49 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day!
My husband is one of these men, having been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer late last year. He had no obvious symptoms, he was healthy and active and is relatively young.
Currently there is no cure for Stage 4 prostate cancer and drugs/interventions can only treat the symptoms caused by cancer metastasis (when the prostate cancer spreads outside the prostate to other parts of the body, such as the bones and lymph glands). We need more research to find ways to successfully treat men with metastatic cancer as well as awareness so men get tested and the cancer is detected early, when it is treatable.
Routine PSA screening (a simple blood test) may have detected and prevented my husband’s disease progression, but screening is not standard in Australia. If prostate cancer is detected early, before it spreads outside the prostate, the current available treatments and drugs give men a very good chance of recovery.
Prostate cancer is responsible for more hospitalisations than ANY other type of cancer. BUT it has a “low profile” compared with some other cancers, since many men don’t feel able to discuss it. The PCFA is working to change this.
During Men's Health Week, (June 13-19th) I will be raising funds for prostate cancer research, awareness and support services, by doing (at least!) 49,000 steps during the “Walk for Him” challenge organised by the PCFA (Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia)
Research and awareness are the way forward to prevent and cure this insidious cancer and to help men like my wonderful husband.

What an amazing effort Sally. Prostate cancer is a topic close to our family. Adrian even did the prostate cancer car rally a few years ago! Good luck
